Introduction to Matrix Connects

“Matrix Connects” is an exciting new series of case studies by Matrix, spotlighting groundbreaking advancements in STEM across Northern Ireland. We are thrilled to present our first ever case study, featuring Empatheyes, an innovative social enterprise founded by Sara McCracken, that is making waves with their transformative technology.

Meeting the Innovators Behind Empatheyes

Recently, the Matrix secretariat met with Sara and Jolene from Empatheyes at their offices to delve into their pioneering work. Empatheyes leverages virtual reality (VR) to create immersive experiences that enable individuals to “see through someone else’s eyes” and understand the world of visual impairment. This innovative approach enhances empathy and awareness, making it a game-changer in the realm of support for visually impaired individuals.

Understanding Visual Impairment

Visual impairment is a significant concern, with 75% of people fearing the loss of sight more than any other sense. Empatheyes’ VR training is designed to address this fear, offering simulations that enhance empathy and improve support for individuals with a visual impairment. Their training programmes cover over 30 different visual conditions, facilitating better memory retention and understanding among professionals and caregivers.

In a world with an ageing population and a rise in preventable conditions like diabetic retinopathy, which affects people diagnosed with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes, the importance of such technology cannot be overstated. These simulations not only aid in developing effective policies and solutions but also help in simplifying complex medical terminology, empowering individuals and caregivers in advocacy.

The Technology Behind Empatheyes

Empatheyes utilises the PICO Neo 3 VR headset, equipped with bespoke software to simulate various visual impairments, including cataracts and progressive deterioration over time. Future advancements might see the integration of augmented reality, further enhancing the immersive experience.

The Genesis of Empatheyes

Sara McCracken’s journey with Empatheyes began with a simple, yet profound idea: using existing technology in novel ways to address significant problems. Initially developed in collaboration with Angel Eyes NI, a charity supporting around 700 children with vision impairments in Northern Ireland, Empatheyes now works with leading technologists and clinicians to ensure their simulations are both realistic and educational.

Global Impact and Future Prospects

Empatheyes’ training sessions are designed for large groups, making them ideal for corporate settings, educational institutions, and healthcare organisations. The global interest in Empatheyes is a testament to its innovative approach, with companies in Scandinavia, Spain, and the US recognising its potential.

This growing recognition underscores the positive outlook for innovation in Northern Ireland, where hubs like the Innovation Factory are fostering groundbreaking solutions to real-world challenges.

Experience Empatheyes Firsthand

Don’t just take our word for it—experience this life-changing technology yourself. Empatheyes will be showcasing their VR simulations at the Portrush Air Show on September 8th-9th, in collaboration with Matrix at this year’s STEM Village.
