Matrix, Northern Ireland’s science industry panel, today announced the launch of our eagerly anticipated report, “Future Skills: Scenarios for the NI Economy.” This landmark study provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolving skills landscape in Northern Ireland, addressing the critical nexus of innovation, technology, and education. The report is launched in a context where skills, or the lack thereof, are frequently cited as a major challenge for businesses across the region.
Mark Huddleston, Chair of the report’s steering group, Managing Director of jheSolutions, and member of the MATRIX panel, shares in the foreword, “Northern Ireland stands at a pivotal juncture, with our young demographic and high levels of entrepreneurial graduates setting the stage for significant advancements in science and technology.” He further outlines the report’s objective to illuminate diverse scenarios impacting socio-economic landscapes, driven by emerging skills needs.
Drawing upon the foundational work of the 2019 Skilling Report, MATRIX’s “Future Skills” report builds on the strategic integration of skills and innovation policy. It delves into potential futures for Northern Ireland, examining how to leverage the region’s strengths—such as its youthful population, high levels of graduate-led start-ups, and significant educational attainment—against persistent challenges like economic inactivity, inclusivity, and geographical disparities.
The report underscores the importance of adaptability, AI and machine learning proficiency, collaborative working, critical thinking, and effective communication as consistent skills needs across sectors. It emphasises the role of digital literacy for all employees, alongside the development of fundamental life skills, to navigate an increasingly technology-driven landscape.
Moreover, the emergence of technologies like AI and generative AI is reshaping the demand for new roles and skills, highlighting the necessity for ongoing upskilling in complex, non-routine tasks. The report stresses the critical role of policy development in supporting skill development and fostering organisations that are adept with technology, data, change, and lifelong learning.
As Mark points out, “The rapid evolution brought about by generative AI and other emerging technologies requires agile responses from individuals, businesses, and societies alike.” He concludes, noting that the report, completed before the February 2024 restoration of the Northern Ireland Executive, remains a vital guide for anticipating the future skills needs of Northern Ireland’s economy in innovation-intense sectors.
Intended for government bodies, academia, and industry leaders, the “Future Skills: Scenarios for the NI Economy” report aims to spark dialogue and action towards developing a resilient, future-ready workforce in Northern Ireland.
