Matrix, the Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel, is excited to announce that it is seeking six new industry members to join its panel. This appointment competition is part of Matrix’s ongoing commitment to fostering innovation and economic development through strategic advice on the commercial exploitation of research and development (R&D) and science and technology.

The role of a panel member is to provide strategic direction, support, constructive challenge, and guidance. An appointment to the Matrix panel gives individuals from different backgrounds and with specific skills and expertise a chance to help make decisions that affect all our lives. Appointments to the Matrix panel are a great opportunity to give something back to the community, whilst developing your own skills and networks.

About Matrix

Matrix is a business-led expert panel that advises the government, industry, and academia on how to maximise financial gain from R&D and science and technology knowledge in Northern Ireland. The panel produces in-depth reports that provide evidence-based recommendations, focusing on key R&D issues, emerging technology priorities, and promoting a culture of innovation.

Sectors of Interest


Matrix is particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the following priority sectors:

– Sustainability including Circular Economy and Low Carbon Technologies
– Life and Health Sciences
– Advanced Manufacturing Materials and Engineering
– Fintech/Financial Services and Software


These sectors align with Minister for the Economy’s economic vision and the four priority areas emphasising productivity, regional balance, good jobs, and net zero.

Roles and Responsibilities

New members will contribute to the panel’s mission by providing strategic direction, supporting constructive challenges, and offering guidance. Key responsibilities include:

– Attending quarterly plenary sessions.
– Engaging in ad hoc meetings related to the Matrix workplan.
– Providing sectoral leadership and stimulating engagement and collaboration between industry, academia, and government.
– Contributing to the overall strategic direction of Matrix in cooperation with the Chair and within the framework agreed with the Department for the Economy (DfE).

Time Commitment and Remuneration

Panel members are expected to commit to attending quarterly plenary meetings and an additional three days per year for other role-related activities. Members will be remunerated at a nominal rate of £150 per quarterly meeting, with all role-related expenses covered.
