SUMMARY:NI Waste Expo 2021
DESCRIPTION:Perfect events for fleet operators looking to keep abreast of the latest fleet compliance requirements and vehicle & tech developments\n\n\nReap the advantages of OWL’s integrated approach \nThe NI Waste Expo and the 2021 OWL Roadshows (Optimised Waste & Logistics) have an innovative revitalised programme that highlights best practice and forward-thinking for public sector fleet and operations managers and their contracting organisations. \nThese events are perfect for fleet operators looking to keep abreast of all the latest fleet compliance requirements and vehicle and technology developments. Topics tackled include electric vehicles\, road transport air pollution\, driver well-being\, fleet safety and compliance\, sustainability\, improving service delivery and much more. \nIn the afternoon\, there is an interactive workshop where peers can discuss and exchange best practice in an informal setting. The Electric Vehicle Workshop tackles several topics\, including the efficient running of an RCV electric vehicle fleet and telematics and duty-cycle anxiety. A panel discussion called fleet electrification and the move towards cleaner air follows this session. Experts will tackle pertinent questions about de-carbonisation and electric RCVs for the attendees. \nAll the OWL Partners will show the latest technology at the industry exhibition\, while the outside display has some of the newest vehicles on show. \nFor more information go to www.owlroadshows.com \nPlease note\, non-qualified individuals are subject to a £250 attendance cost. \nOWL events aim to bring together the public sector fleet management industry interactively and effectively. OWL has established itself as the UK and Ireland’s premier conference and exhibition series where end-users meet suppliers and OEMs to create an integrated approach for fleet management and vehicle and systems procurement. The OWL Partnership endeavours to promote efficiency\, help deliver cost-savings\, create a better return on investment\, while helping to contribute to unpolluted air and a cleaner environment overall. \nFor organisations wishing to access untapped intelligence essential for remaining compliant and efficient\, the OWL events are crucial. \nCILT awards CPD points for attendance at OWL events. \nShould you wish to exhibit at NI Waste Expo please contact Visie Communications\, email: jason.pidgeon@visiecommunications.co.uk now to become part of this unique community.

SUMMARY:Active Travel Summit
DESCRIPTION:Accelerating the UK’s active travel industry towards Healthy\, Connected and Net Zero places\n\n\nEvent Summary: \nThe Active Travel Summit aims to celebrate and accelerate the UK active travel market. By convening innovators\, city leaders\, transport authorities\, active travel commissioners\, central government\, business leaders and world-leading academics\, we will open a space to explore current blockers and propose new mechanisms to unlock the full potential of active travel to power the shift to healthy\, low carbon mobility. \nFull Event Description: \nTogether with industry and place leaders\, we want to develop an ambitious\, coordinated and directed active travel programme that will grow the UK active travel market and drive jobs\, enterprise\, innovation\, investment\, and trade opportunities. There are many definitions of Active Travel. At the Catapult we take an inclusive approach which broadly covers any means of getting from A to B where your legs\, arms and heart do their fair share of the work. \nThe Active Travel Summit brings together a cross-section of stakeholders vital to accelerating the active travel agenda and unlocking the full potential of the active travel market\, from decision-makers and planners in government\, cities and towns\, through to the investment community\, small and large businesses\, academia\, strategic bodies and not-for-profit organisations. \nThe Summit will feature TeamGB stars like Dame Sarah Storey – Active Travel Commissioner for the Sheffield City Region – and her London equivalent\, Will Norman\, with business leaders like Will Butler Adams from Brompton Bikes\, Arup’s Susan Claris and innovative property developers like Harry Badham and Roger Madelin of Hammerson and British Land respectively. The new Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department for Transport\, Professor Sarah Sharples and Professor Rachel Aldred of the Active Travel Academy will bring to life the UK’s leading role in related fields of science and research. \nThe Connected Places Catapult is taking the lead on accelerating solutions by identifying opportunities and tackling the challenges faced by this high-potential industry. SUMMARY:From seeds to needs: Regenerating ecosystems services to halt the biodiversity crisis
DESCRIPTION:Where can interdisciplinary collaborations with engineering solutions make the largest impact? Apply to participate in the RAEng Frontiers Symposia – if successful you can bid for seed funding to take forward a collaborative project established at the event\, ensuring that partnerships are built to last. \nAttendance at a Frontiers symposia is by invitation only following a rigorous selection process. Applicants can self nominate or nominate an other person for a specific event or make a general application. \nApply to attend – Royal Academy of Engineering (raeng.org.uk) \nThe goal of the symposia is to facilitate introductions and collaboration between outstanding researchers\, innovators and practitioners working in the international development field. \nWhilst working jointly on concepts for engineering for development\, attendees share new techniques and approaches across disciplinary boundaries and build lasting connections. Delegates will be approximately 0-20 years post-doc\, or have equivalent experience in industry\, presenting a great opportunity to establish valuable contacts with the next generation of engineering leaders and beyond. \nSymposium content and themes\nWe face a global biodiversity crisis\, with unprecedented and accelerating rates of species extinctions and degradation of habitats. This will have grave impacts on the worlds human population dependent on the ecosystems services they provide.  However\, biodiversity is a broad theme with many challenges encompassed within it. There is a need to simultaneously identify the major challenges faced (such as those defined by the Sustainable Development Goals) and the areas where interdisciplinary environmental engineering and science can have the greatest impact to maximise the benefits gained relative to costs – “maximising the bang for the buck”. \nIt is recognised that the global biodiversity emergency affects lower- and middle-income countries the hardest. There are potential conflicts between conservation efforts and resource exploitation that can often negatively impact the communities in LMICs and undermine efforts of development. \nThis symposium will scope out those challenges that would most benefit from engineering solutions\, as part of interdisciplinary collaborations\, and explore this within the context of the themes: Marine\, Freshwater and Terrestrial. \nEach theme will be explored from a research\, policy and industry perspective\, facilitating dialogue from a wide range of disciplines\, including engineering\, environmental science and management\, social sciences\, and economics and governance. \nEvent Chairs\nPaul Kemp\, Professor of Ecological Engineering\, University of Southampton\n \nPaul Kemp is a Professor of Ecological Engineering and director of the International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research at University of Southampton and founding editor in chief of the IAHR Journal of Ecohydraulics. As a result of his interest in sustainable infrastructure and the built environment he is also director of the University of Southampton Future Towns Innovation Hub\, the EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Infrastructure Systems\, and the UKCRIC CDT in Sustainable Infrastructure for Cities. \nPaul’s interests relate to the development of more environmentally friendly water\, energy and food systems\, and in particular sustainable fisheries management.  His research focuses on the application of behavioural ecology to understanding and solving challenges in water and energy engineering\, particularly how the physical environment (e.g. hydrodynamics and acoustics) influence the behaviour and physiological performance of fish\, and how manipulation of that environment by engineering means can be used to mitigate for negative impacts of water and energy resource development. Specific applications include fish pass and screening design\, assigning compensation flow regimes\, and improving habitat restoration strategies. \n*Second chair to be announced\n Symposium Format\nVirtual symposium\nDelegates meet and work together on the Frontiers’ virtual platform\, where they watch pre-recorded presentations\, engage in theme related content\, network with other delegates and collaborate on seed funding. \nThis leads to 2 days of live event in the second week where delegates participate in breakout rooms to workshop the ideas being discussed on the platform. \nParticipants are obliged to participate in every session to maximise the opportunity to make new contacts and build collaborative relationships. To ensure there is a balance of formal and informal networking opportunities\, informal networking will be organised. \nPost event funding\nFollowing the symposium\, there will be an opportunity to be awarded up to £20\,000 in seed funding for an idea generated from collaborations created during the event. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:AI for Governance and Governance of AI
DESCRIPTION:How can we safely exploit and govern AI?\n\n\nSPEAKER\nMike Small of KuppingerCole \nAGENDA\n\n\n18:15 – Room Opens \n18.30 – Presentation \n19.30 – Close \n\n\nSYNOPSIS \nHow can we safely exploit and govern AI? \nArtificial Intelligence is a hot topic and many organizations are looking to exploit it\, but there are many concerns around the impact this will have on society. The concept of AI is not new\, but cloud computing has provided the access to data and computing power needed to turn it into a practical reality. \nHowever\, despite some concerns\, the current state of AI is still a long way from the Sci-Fi portrayal of a threat to humanity. Machine Learning technologies provide significantly improved capabilities to analyse large amounts of data. While this poses a threat of “Big Other” it also makes them suitable for spotting patterns and anomalies so\, potentially useful for detecting fraudulent activity\, security breaches and non-compliance. Whatever our concerns\, these technologies will be used by our cyber adversaries. \nArtificial Intelligence is a hot topic and many organizations are looking to exploit it\, but there are many concerns around the impact this will have on society. SUMMARY:Innovation for Targeted Management of Multimorbidity
DESCRIPTION:Innovate UK\, in collaboration with KTN\, will deliver a two day workshop on multiple long term conditions on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2021. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhile populations around the world are living longer and we better survive disease such as cancer\, multimorbidity is an emerging global health priority. Around 1 in every 4 of all adults in the UK are now living with two or more chronic medical conditions and the associated burden of polypharmacy. The impacts on patient outcomes are widely disproportionate across the UK with multimorbidity presenting on average 10-15 years earlier in disadvantaged populations. \nThe majority of diagnostics\, therapeutics and digital healthcare technologies currently being  developed target specific disease indications within separate patient interventions. \nThe vision to be discussed at this workshop is how an expanding knowledge of disease clusters and the biomarkers that underpin them can transform market opportunities and growth for UK businesses developing diagnostics\, therapeutics and digital solutions that are optimised and made available to all patients with multiple long-term conditions\, regardless of socioeconomic status. Advances in pharmacogenomic capabilities that inform personalised sensitivity to drugs and ease the burden of polypharmacy will also be discussed. \nIf you would like to contribute to this critical discussion\, please register your Expression of Interest for either or both of the following workshops. \n\nDay 1  – Challenges and opportunities for better detection\, diagnosis and clinical management of multimorbidity \nThe focus of this session is to explore how the UK health system is currently responding to the increasing number of patients with multiple long-term conditions and the impacts of healthcare inequalities on patient outcomes. We will also explore opportunities for businesses to bring about much needed innovations in the prevention\, early diagnosis and management of multi-morbidity. \nBreakout sessions \n\nHow to achieve an equitable\, inclusive\, patient-centred management of multimorbidity.\nSupport for business-led innovation: how to create an environment where multimorbidity solutions can be adopted?\nPopulation health and integrated care / outcomes based care: how can we deliver better management of multimorbidity in this evolving healthcare ecosystem?\n\nDay 2 –  Innovation to optimise  therapeutic options for prevention and treatment of multimorbidity \nThe focus of this day is to explore unmet clinical needs in the effective treatment and therapy of patients with multiple long term conditions. Such patients have been historically excluded from clinical trials and also suffer from the burden of polypharmacy complications that affect quality of life. Innovation that supports a more holistic and personalised intervention\, that applies patient stratification and pharmacogenomics\, could dramatically improve health outcomes for diverse patient groups. \nBreakout sessions \n\nChallenges and opportunities of delivering personalised treatment for multimorbid patients (including role of pharmacogenomics and polypharmacy)\nReal world clinical trials: how can we support a more inclusive approach?\nHow to translate complex data into meaningful clinical decision support?

SUMMARY:Future of Work Summit
DESCRIPTION:Whilst the future remains uncertain\, innovation and technology continue to lead instrumental change in the nature of work. But is it sustainable\, and how can companies prepare for a future not yet defined? Future of Work Summit 2021 is committed to delivering key insights into new ways of working\, providing a platform to discuss and debate the challenges and solutions – underpinned by the transformative impact of technology. \nWith 2020 providing an unintentional mass home working experiment\, we have proven our resilience\, as employees continue to work\, develop new skills\, and adopt new ways of living. These changes to how we work provided a temporary solution\, and now the question remains; how do we create a sustainable future of work which continues to use technology to build a more effective workplace? \nThis year\, we will focus the conversation through these key topics: \n\nThe growing need for robust working solutions. Employees proved they can work effectively outside the office hub\, promoting the rise of the future of hybrid working. With this however\, came new challenges concerning equality\, accessibility\, and security in a remote environment.\nAddressing the digital divide. There must be a move towards addressing the diverse digital habits and capabilities of each generation. This is key to managing the generation gap and attracting multigenerational talent in an increasingly competitive market.\nThe blend of technology and wellbeing. Something which has greatly suffered since the start of the pandemic\, maintaining this new level of support and engagement with colleagues will be a challenge. It has given rise to new expectations of companies to better prioritise wellbeing\, and to utilise technology to aid new strategies.\nCreating a desirable culture. This will be crucial for business leaders looking to attract and retain new talent whilst remaining competitive. Cultivating an inclusive environment to embrace all colleagues and empower diverse perspectives to drive change will be essential.\n\nIntegration of technology into the workplace has changed how employees and businesses engage with work\, whilst simultaneously workers’ expectations have begun to change as they search for greater flexibility and more meaning. The Future of Work Summit 2021 provides a unique opportunity to discuss these developing attitudes and gain new perspectives on the challenges. The way we work is changing\, and it has never been more important to understand and prepare for the future.

SUMMARY:Hitting net zero: how the government can decarbonise homes
DESCRIPTION:Decarbonising homes will be among the most difficult elements of reaching net zero. Homes account for 15% of the UK’s total emissions\, yet there has been little progress towards reducing these over the past decade. Confidence has been damaged by repeated U-turns and policy failures\, including the Green Deal and the Green Homes Grant. \nAchieving net zero by 2050 will require a huge national programme to deliver the infrastructure needed to reduce residential emissions – retrofitting homes\, installing heat pumps and developing local heat networks. The government\, businesses and consumers all have key roles to play. But how should the government approach policy making in this area? Will the long overdue Heat and Buildings Strategy be worth the wait and offer a clear plan? How can previous policy failures be learnt from? And how can we ensure the UK’s infrastructure is ready to support zero-emission homes? \nOn our panel to discuss these issues will be: \n\nLord Callanan\, Minister for Business\, Energy & Corporate Responsibility at BEIS\nChris Burchell\, Managing Director\, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution\nGillian Cooper\, Head of Energy Policy at Citizens Advice\nGuy Newey\, Director of Strategy and Performance at the Energy Systems Catapult\n\nThis event will be chaired by Marcus Shepheard\, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government
