You might know what it means in a game\, but what does it mean for the UK? \nWith no solid definition\, ‘levelling up’ could mean something different to everyone\, and with no official ‘levelling up’ dataset to work from\, there isn’t a way to currently track progress or keep things accountable. Open Innovations will be leading a project to explore ‘levelling up’ from a Northern perspective\, by working in the open\, inviting discussion and suggestions\, and developing a prototype visualisation with open data at its foundation. \nWhat open data will we use? Well\, this is where you come in… \nThe project will start in November 2021 and finish in February 2022\, with three key stages and events that accompany them\, plus opportunities for people to contribute their feedback\, suggestions\, data sources\, etc. \nOpen Innovations uses a method of rapid innovation to work in a radically open way to produce results quickly and efficiently. Our process is purposely initially informally unstructured but ultimately productive to allow for free communication\, knowledge exchange\, change and action. Please use this document to share any thoughts\, links\, resources and questions. \nThe event will take place virtually and be live-streamed to our website here – but to join in & ask questions we ask you to sign up to be able to access the Airmeet platform.

DESCRIPTION:During the first half of November\, international leaders gathered in Glasgow for COP26\, the UN climate conference. The meeting was identified by many as critical to determining whether the world can realistically meet the targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement\, and thereby mitigate the increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change. As signalled by Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen\, “the EU will bring to Glasgow the highest level of ambition”.  Yet it remains to be seen if others will follow\, including its own member states\, and commit to join forces and resources in a common approach. \nEither way\, the COP26 outcomes will be followed with keen interest by European research and innovation communities. Will COP26 deliver a major boost for the Green Deal\, with its technology-driven transformation of industry?  Will it provide a new framing and direction of travel for Horizon Europe\, with 35% of its budget committed to climate-related topics?  Will it unleash a new wave of climate innovation financing?  And will it open more doors to international cooperation and alliances\, both scientific and governmental\, in pursuit of solutions that will make a measurable difference? \nIn this public\, livestreamed debate\, Science|Business will bring together leading figures from the worlds of policy\, science and industry to reflect on the outcomes from Glasgow\, and to discuss their implications for European science and technology in the months ahead.

DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT\nIt is hard to under-estimate the importance of COP26 for reaching global agreement on decarbonisation pathways and financing packages that match the urgency and scale of the climate crisis. In the wake of COP26\, our final Ask the Engineers panel will review what has been achieved at the summit and whether it has helped to accelerate progress towards a just transition to net zero emissions by 2050. \nThe engineering profession can offer solutions\, but must work ambitiously and collaboratively to drive change. SUMMARY:AI Lab Skunkworks: Using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Join AI Lab Skunkworks to learn how they have been experimenting with using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital. \nCT scans are used in the detection and understanding of disease. Radiologists currently manually compare two CT scans\, taken at different dates\, to see whether a patient’s disease has improved\, deteriorated or remained unchanged. \nThis 12-week project investigated the AI techniques that could be applied to the problem and sought to provide a proof of concept (a feasibility study) about whether it was possible to identify organs and growths\, report on any changes and highlight areas of concern to the radiologist. \nThe AI Lab Skunkworks works on demonstrating the potential of AI through proof-of-concepts and upskilling the workforce through a knowledge-sharing model. We help healthcare organisations apply AI to their problems through rapid\, agile\, iterative projects. DESCRIPTION:How we are taxed will be crucial to how government pays for net zero. It can use the tax system to incentivise sustainable choices by businesses and consumers as well as disincentivise harmful ones. But government revenues will also fall as people and businesses adapt their behaviour to reduce carbon emissions\, with the shift to electric vehicles set to eliminate fuel duties. \nSo what changes are needed to ensure the tax system raises revenue to fund public interventions\, redistributes the costs of getting to net zero\, and shores up the tax take as fuel duties decline? \nThis event will take place after a busy autumn of net zero strategies\, a budget and COP26. Significant injections of additional Government funding were required to help adapt service delivery models and meet increased demand for services related to the pandemic. \nAmid Covid-19\, the health and social care sectors have introduced new and innovative ways to operate safely and efficiently—yet new challenges have emerged related to treatment delays\, on-going infection risk and increased demand on services such as mental health and wellbeing. \n5G has the potential to support innovation in these areas and across the sectors as a whole: facilitating more efficient and effective ways of working. Globally\, developed economies share these challenges while emerging economies continuously face extremely challenging conditions and ongoing shortages of skilled workforce\, further enhanced by pandemic fallout. Health and Care service delivery has seen an acceleration towards community services (treatment and management away from hospitals)  meaning increased reliance on data and communication systems both in wireless tech and  wired connectivity formats. \n5G has great potential to replace and enhance such connectivity and much more besides. DESCRIPTION:CE Marking is mandated by European Directives. UKCA marking is mandated by UK Statutory Instruments. \nMany products are covered by these directives and\, to be placed on the European and GB market\, must bear the ‘CE’ or ‘UKCA’ mark – it’s a legal requirement. \nWith Brexit completed it will still remain vitally important for companies to make sure that their product technical files and Declarations of Conformity are comprehensive\, up to date and clearly documented whether products are being sold to GB customers or to EU markets. \nThis seminar is based primarily on the Machinery Directive. It provides guidance on compliance and assists participants to determine the route that is most appropriate\, cost-effective and efficient for their product. For the majority of companies\, CE and UKCA marking is a self-certification process and involves an evaluation of the product or machine using risk assessments and relevant standards. \nThe course will be interactive and participative\, with opportunities for discussion. DESCRIPTION:The net zero series sheds light on the work already undertaken by UKRI’s flagship programme -the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.\n\n\nWe live in a time of unprecedented change. The way we live our lives and do business is impacting the planet and driving environmental change on a scale unique in the Earth’s history. We are consuming our natural resources at unprecedented levels whilst polluting our environment\, affecting our air\, soils\, water and biodiversity. This is increasing the challenges linked to extreme weather and a changing climate which can have devastating impacts on the environment and human life and hinder economic growth. To meet these challenges\, and recognising our leadership potential\, in 2019 the UK became the first major economy to commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050.  \nThe net zero series sheds light on the work already undertaken by UKRI’s flagship programme -the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund to address the key challenges that will help the UK build back greener. It will bring together world-renowned researchers and innovators across the breadth of our funding disciplines to discuss the need for innovative solutions to heat our homes\, travel to work\, develop and transform our industries\, cater to our diet\, enjoy our leisure time\, and prosper from a cleaner\, healthier environment in parallel with growing our economy. \nWe will run a monthly webinar from April to November featuring ISCF challenges\, UKRI councils and project leads\, as well as renowned external experts from academia\, industry and technology fields.  \nIn September we will be discussing Sustainable Energy: To succeed in limiting global warming\, the UK urgently needs to use energy efficiently while embracing clean energy sources to make things move\, heat up and cool down. It is the home of the Northern Ireland WISE Hub\, which was launched last year with support from the Department for the Economy. Pulsar also promotes the work of the DfE Women in STEM Steering Group\, made up of key stakeholders from industry\, education and the public sector\, who provide advice and support for the NI WISE Hub. The Steering Group is currently working with DfE to produce an Action Plan which will outline how women and girls can best be encouraged into STEM roles in Northern Ireland.
