SUMMARY:Ask the engineers: Is hydrogen the silver bullet that will help achieve net zero?
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT\nThe government recently set out its strategy for developing a thriving low carbon hydrogen sector in the UK to meet its stated ambition to achieve 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. \nHydrogen is an energy vector rather than a source of energy – once produced from an energy source\, it can be stored and transported. Despite rapid technological advances and research\, there is still much discussion about how hydrogen should be produced and how it should be used. The third event in our Ask the Engineers series will assess the potential of hydrogen\, and its challenges. \nFrom hydrogen startups to big energy companies\, how much difference do engineers think hydrogen can make to the drive towards net zero? \nSpeakers\n\nChair: Alok Jha\, Science and Technology Correspondent\, The Economist\nDr Enass Abo-Hamed\, Chief Executive Officer\, H2GoPower\nProfessor Rebecca Lunn MBE FREng FRSE\, Professor of Civil Engineering\, University of Strathclyde\n\nMore panellists to be confirmed soon.  \nSupported by:\nARUP as the technology partner of the Ask the engineers series. \nTickets\nThis event is free of charge but registration is required. After registering\, you will receive an email that contains further details on joining the online event. If you have any questions\, please contact Amy Stratton\, Events Manager at the Royal Academy of Engineering. \nEngineering Zero\nThis event series is part of the Academy’s campaign Engineering Zero\, which aims to bring the engineering profession together to advance engineering’s contribution to net zero\, working in partnership with the National Engineering Policy Centre and our global networks. More information about the campaign can be found here. \nRecording notice\nPlease note this event will be recorded and published on the Royal Academy of Engineering website. \nAccessibility\nIt is very important to the Royal Academy of Engineering that our events are accessible to all. If you have any accessibility requirements\, please contact the Events team at your earliest convenience so that necessary arrangements can be made.

SUMMARY:CE Marking for Mechanical Engineering Seminar
DESCRIPTION:CE Marking is mandated by European Directives. UKCA marking is mandated by UK Statutory Instruments. \nMany products are covered by these directives and\, to be placed on the European and GB market\, must bear the ‘CE’ or ‘UKCA’ mark – it’s a legal requirement. \nWith Brexit completed it will still remain vitally important for companies to make sure that their product technical files and Declarations of Conformity are comprehensive\, up to date and clearly documented whether products are being sold to GB customers or to EU markets. \nThis seminar is based primarily on the Machinery Directive. It provides guidance on compliance and assists participants to determine the route that is most appropriate\, cost-effective and efficient for their product. For the majority of companies\, CE and UKCA marking is a self-certification process and involves an evaluation of the product or machine using risk assessments and relevant standards. \nThe course will be interactive and participative\, with opportunities for discussion. On completion\, participants should: \n\nHave gained an understanding of the statutory requirements involved.\nUnderstand technical requirements and interpret compliance standards.\nBe able to apply risk assessment techniques relevant to CE and UKCA marking.\nUnderstand the relevant marking process and identify the best route to compliance.\n\nThe seminar will be presented over 2 days as follows:- \nDay 1 17th November 2021\n09:30 Welcome & Introductions\n09:35 BREXIT\, CE\, UKCA & UKNI\n10:00 The Machinery Directive & PUWER\n10:45 Q&A & Break\n11:15 Essential Health & Safety Requirements\n11:45 Other Directives – EMC\, RoHS\, LVD\n12:15 Q&A \nDay 2 18th November 2021\n09:30 Welcome & Introductions\n09:35 Mechanical Standards and control systems\n10:30 Practical Risk Assessment\n11:00 Q&A & Break\n11:30 Technical File & DoC and SOPs\n12:15 Q&A and Close

SUMMARY:5G & Manufacturing | Productivity & Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:With businesses facing increasing customer demands and pressure on margins\, maximising uptime is crucial for profitability: downtime costs manufacturers in the UK three days of production per year on average.  “Fix it when it’s broken” or “regular maintenance every six months” are inefficient\, wasteful and impact profit margins. They are  not the best options in today’s fast-paced environment. \n5G will transform the sector\, enabling more efficient and effective ways of working. Globally\, the sector is experiencing ever shorter product life cycles; against a backdrop of rapid shifts in trends and increasing demand for personalisation\, consumers expect agility. In a time of shrinking margins\, maximising uptime is more important than ever to retain profitability. \nThis event\, from UK5G and The Manufacturer\, will be of interest to anyone concerned about the productivity and efficiency of their manufacturing operations in the future.

SUMMARY:5G in Transport & Logistics: 5G 101
DESCRIPTION:5G\, 25% better than 4G\, right? No. 5G can be marketed as the next generation of mobile tech but fundamental changes in the way 5G networks are built and work make it an extremely powerful digital transformation tool. On one level it’s fibre (gigabyte) connectivity delivered wirelessly\, great for the Enhanced Mobile Broadband experience now being rolled out by the Public Networks. \nDig deeper and the flexibility\, power and control 5G brings to managing data make it an eminently deployable means to increase productivity\, reduce waste and contribute to the bottom line. \nThis session is a (mostly) non-technical look at 5G. Where it differs from what’s come before\, the capabilities it unlocks\, the role of Public and Private Networks. It will be of interest to anyone wanting to know how 5G can be applied in Transport & Logistics. \nKTN is a delivery partner for UK5G\nUK5G is the national innovation network dedicated to the promotion of research\, collaboration and the industrial application of 5G in the UK. Its mission is to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of global 5G development. KTN is a delivery partner for UK5G.

SUMMARY:5G in Health and Social Care - Webinar Series
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, UK Healthcare spend accounted for 12.8% of GDP\, £269 billion. The NHS alone employs 1.6 million people\, treating millions of patients and supporting further millions of citizens in need of help and guidance. Significant injections of additional Government funding were required to help adapt service delivery models and meet increased demand for services related to the pandemic. \nAmid Covid-19\, the health and social care sectors have introduced new and innovative ways to operate safely and efficiently—yet new challenges have emerged related to treatment delays\, on-going infection risk and increased demand on services such as mental health and wellbeing. \n5G has the potential to support innovation in these areas and across the sectors as a whole: facilitating more efficient and effective ways of working. Globally\, developed economies share these challenges while emerging economies continuously face extremely challenging conditions and ongoing shortages of skilled workforce\, further enhanced by pandemic fallout. Health and Care service delivery has seen an acceleration towards community services (treatment and management away from hospitals)  meaning increased reliance on data and communication systems both in wireless tech and  wired connectivity formats. \n5G has great potential to replace and enhance such connectivity and much more besides. It may prove to be a key platform to underpin the innovation in  adjacent  technologies and in ‘best practice’\, which will become necessary to build sustainable health\, care (and increasingly wellbeing and preventative) service designs for the future. \nThis series of events will be of interest to anyone involved in contemporary health and care service design or delivery.

SUMMARY:Reaching net zero – is the tax system ready?
DESCRIPTION:How we are taxed will be crucial to how government pays for net zero. It can use the tax system to incentivise sustainable choices by businesses and consumers as well as disincentivise harmful ones. But government revenues will also fall as people and businesses adapt their behaviour to reduce carbon emissions\, with the shift to electric vehicles set to eliminate fuel duties. \nSo what changes are needed to ensure the tax system raises revenue to fund public interventions\, redistributes the costs of getting to net zero\, and shores up the tax take as fuel duties decline? \nThis event will take place after a busy autumn of net zero strategies\, a budget and COP26. It will ask how the government should adapt the tax system to reach net zero and whether the budget was a missed opportunity\, look at the steps being taken in other countries\, and set out how to overcome the barriers – political and otherwise – to reform. \nThe panel to discuss these issues will be: \n\nRt Hon David Gauke\, Head of Public Policy at Macfarlanes LLP and former Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nJames Murray MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nChris Stark\, Chief Executive of the Committee on Climate Change\nAmanda Tickel\, Head of Tax & Trade Policy for Deloitte UK\n\nThe event will be chaired by Dr Gemma Tetlow\, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government.

SUMMARY:AI Lab Skunkworks: Using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Join AI Lab Skunkworks to learn how they have been experimenting with using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital. \nCT scans are used in the detection and understanding of disease. Radiologists currently manually compare two CT scans\, taken at different dates\, to see whether a patient’s disease has improved\, deteriorated or remained unchanged. \nThis 12-week project investigated the AI techniques that could be applied to the problem and sought to provide a proof of concept (a feasibility study) about whether it was possible to identify organs and growths\, report on any changes and highlight areas of concern to the radiologist. \nThe AI Lab Skunkworks works on demonstrating the potential of AI through proof-of-concepts and upskilling the workforce through a knowledge-sharing model. We help healthcare organisations apply AI to their problems through rapid\, agile\, iterative projects. By running an open call\, we help develop proof of concepts through a 12 week process usually helped by a supplier.  We’re excited to present the results of our last project. \nJoin us for this webinar to learn more: \n\nAbout whether AI could be used to identify features in a CT scan and automatically align images to provide radiologists with a quick\, trustworthy support tool that would improve early detection and diagnosis of growths and improve patient outcomes.\nLearn more about the current problem radiologists face\,\nThe AI technique the Roke team used.\nChallenges faced and lessons learned through this project.

SUMMARY:UKAuthority AI & Bots4Good 2021
DESCRIPTION:Artificial intelligence and automation are moving to the fore in public service delivery\n\n\nAre automation and artificial intelligence core to the future of our health and public sector?\nDuring the pandemic automation\, or Robotic Process Automation (RPA)\, was deployed by many across local government and the NHS to automate the tsunami of new tasks related to covid testing and vaccinations. It’s reliability and efficiency has played a starring role and has much to bring to the sector as we move forward. \nMeanwhile from intelligent automation to machine learning and artificial intelligence we are exploring new ways to visualise and use data to gain insight into the impacts of action – or inaction – on our world. \nWith the power to free time\, release scarce resources and supercharge innovation\, the question is\, should these be specialist skills or embedded as foundational tools for the future of public services? \nThis event is free to attend for the public sector and accredited for five hours CPD. \nPlease register using your public sector email. Please note that registrations from personal email addresses may be rejected. \nSpeakers and agenda\nThe agenda for this event will be finalised shortly. Contact Helen Olsen Bedford if you are interested in speaker or sponsorship opportunities: helen@ukauthority.co.uk \nFor a flavour of this virtual event visit last year’s AI & Bots4Good 2020 \nWho should attend?\nAll those involved in developing or implementing RPA\, intelligent automation and artificial intelligence to help improve outcomes for our citizens and patients\, including\, but not limited to\, NHS\, Local Authority and Central Government Chief Information Officers\, Chief Digital / Data Officers\, Data Scientists / Analysts\, Heads of and Seniors of IT and Automation\, Assistant and Chief Executives\, Members\, Heads of and leaders in Customer Services\, Social Services\, Environmental Services\, Transformation or Change. \nRegistration\nUKAuthority has full editorial control of this event thanks to support from our partners. By registering for this event you agree to the sharing of your name\, organisation\, job title and work email address with the UKAuthority editorial team and partner organisations hosting this event. SUMMARY:Ask the engineers: Post-COP26 - what have we achieved and where do we go from here?
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT\nIt is hard to under-estimate the importance of COP26 for reaching global agreement on decarbonisation pathways and financing packages that match the urgency and scale of the climate crisis. In the wake of COP26\, our final Ask the Engineers panel will review what has been achieved at the summit and whether it has helped to accelerate progress towards a just transition to net zero emissions by 2050. \nThe engineering profession can offer solutions\, but must work ambitiously and collaboratively to drive change. Our crucial offering to this monumental challenge relies on engineers being engaged alongside policy makers\, economists and the public. \nHas COP26 set the UK on a decisive pathway to net zero? \nSpeakers\n\nChairperson: Alok Jha\, Science and Technology Correspondent\, The Economist\nProfessor Nilay Shah OBE FREng\, Head of Department of Chemical Engineering\, Imperial College London\nDame Joanna da Silva DBE FREng\, Director of International Development\, Arup\nSinead Obeng\, Chair\, Energy Institute Young Professionals Council and Regulatory Affairs Adviser\, Gazprom Marketing and Trading\nRachel Skinner FREng\, President\, Institution of Civil Engineers and Executive Producer\, WSP UK\n\nSupported by:\nArup as the technology partner of the Ask the engineers series. \nTickets\nThis event is free of charge but registration is required. SUMMARY:Beyond Glasgow: What impact will COP26 have on Europe’s green dreams?
DESCRIPTION:During the first half of November\, international leaders gathered in Glasgow for COP26\, the UN climate conference. The meeting was identified by many as critical to determining whether the world can realistically meet the targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement\, and thereby mitigate the increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change. As signalled by Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen\, “the EU will bring to Glasgow the highest level of ambition”.  Yet it remains to be seen if others will follow\, including its own member states\, and commit to join forces and resources in a common approach. \nEither way\, the COP26 outcomes will be followed with keen interest by European research and innovation communities. Will COP26 deliver a major boost for the Green Deal\, with its technology-driven transformation of industry?  Will it provide a new framing and direction of travel for Horizon Europe\, with 35% of its budget committed to climate-related topics?  Will it unleash a new wave of climate innovation financing?  And will it open more doors to international cooperation and alliances\, both scientific and governmental\, in pursuit of solutions that will make a measurable difference? \nIn this public\, livestreamed debate\, Science|Business will bring together leading figures from the worlds of policy\, science and industry to reflect on the outcomes from Glasgow\, and to discuss their implications for European science and technology in the months ahead.
