SUMMARY:Hunter Memorial Lecture - Hydrogen and its application for rail propulsion
DESCRIPTION:The UK railway is committed to removing diesel only fleets from the network by 2040.  In railway terms\, this is a pressing deadline\, as new vehicles built today would easily be expected to have an economic service life of 40 years\, well beyond the 2040 deadline. This means new carbon free traction systems need to be developed to deliver autonomous  traction on routes without overhead electrification. Hydrogen is emerging as a strong contender to provide this traction capability. The HydroFLEX train has demonstrated its viability and is ready to enter service trails on the mainline network. This presentation will give an overview of how the technology works\, its strengths and weaknesses and what types of application it is best suited for\, and where you should electrify. \nSpeaker\nProfessor Stuart Hillmansen is Professor in Railway Traction Systems within the School of Engineering at the University of Birmingham. He completed a PhD in Imperial College London. His main area of research interest is in traction systems for use in railway vehicles\, and modeling and measurement of energy consumption for railway systems (both AC and DC). His team have developed the 1st Hydrogen Fueled locomotive in the UK\, and is currently heavily involved in the industry’s efforts to decarbonize. \nThis event was organised by the Midlands Power Group.

DESCRIPTION:CE Marking is mandated by European Directives. UKCA marking is mandated by UK Statutory Instruments. \nMany products are covered by these directives and\, to be placed on the European and GB market\, must bear the ‘CE’ or ‘UKCA’ mark – it’s a legal requirement. \nWith Brexit completed it will still remain vitally important for companies to make sure that their product technical files and Declarations of Conformity are comprehensive\, up to date and clearly documented whether products are being sold to GB customers or to EU markets. \nThis seminar is based primarily on the Machinery Directive. It provides guidance on compliance and assists participants to determine the route that is most appropriate\, cost-effective and efficient for their product. There is a need to simultaneously identify the major challenges faced (such as those defined by the Sustainable Development Goals) and the areas where interdisciplinary environmental engineering and science can have the greatest impact to maximise the benefits gained relative to costs – “maximising the bang for the buck”. \nIt is recognised that the global biodiversity emergency affects lower- and middle-income countries the hardest. There are potential conflicts between conservation efforts and resource exploitation that can often negatively impact the communities in LMICs and undermine efforts of development. \nThis symposium will scope out those challenges that would most benefit from engineering solutions\, as part of interdisciplinary collaborations\, and explore this within the context of the themes: Marine\, Freshwater and Terrestrial. \nEach theme will be explored from a research\, policy and industry perspective\, facilitating dialogue from a wide range of disciplines\, including engineering\, environmental science and management\, social sciences\, and economics and governance. \nEvent Chairs\nPaul Kemp\, Professor of Ecological Engineering\, University of Southampton\n \nPaul Kemp is a Professor of Ecological Engineering and director of the International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research at University of Southampton and founding editor in chief of the IAHR Journal of Ecohydraulics. As a result of his interest in sustainable infrastructure and the built environment he is also director of the University of Southampton Future Towns Innovation Hub\, the EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Infrastructure Systems\, and the UKCRIC CDT in Sustainable Infrastructure for Cities. \nPaul’s interests relate to the development of more environmentally friendly water\, energy and food systems\, and in particular sustainable fisheries management.  His research focuses on the application of behavioural ecology to understanding and solving challenges in water and energy engineering\, particularly how the physical environment (e.g. hydrodynamics and acoustics) influence the behaviour and physiological performance of fish\, and how manipulation of that environment by engineering means can be used to mitigate for negative impacts of water and energy resource development. Specific applications include fish pass and screening design\, assigning compensation flow regimes\, and improving habitat restoration strategies. \n*Second chair to be announced\n Symposium Format\nVirtual symposium\nDelegates meet and work together on the Frontiers’ virtual platform\, where they watch pre-recorded presentations\, engage in theme related content\, network with other delegates and collaborate on seed funding. \nThis leads to 2 days of live event in the second week where delegates participate in breakout rooms to workshop the ideas being discussed on the platform. \nParticipants are obliged to participate in every session to maximise the opportunity to make new contacts and build collaborative relationships. To ensure there is a balance of formal and informal networking opportunities\, informal networking will be organised. \nPost event funding\nFollowing the symposium\, there will be an opportunity to be awarded up to £20\,000 in seed funding for an idea generated from collaborations created during the event. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Enabling Zero Carbon Flight – Airport infrastructure and sustainable product lifecycle
DESCRIPTION:The FlyZero project – led by the UK’s Aerospace Technology Institute – is working to develop roadmaps for technology bricks critical to realising zero carbon emission commercial flight. This event will focus on key supporting technology bricks: alternate fuel supplies at airport and minimising lifecycle impact. The purpose of the event is to share and discuss the challenges around developing these technology bricks to maturity across sectors and to identify UK capability and opportunities. \nThe event will be jointly hosted by ADS Scotland and by the Aerospace Technology Institute.
