But what happens when customers demand more product variation\, where you need to switch a process from one product to another\, or where batch sizes are small? This event will explore how digital technology can help manufacturers maintain efficiency and asset utilisation whilst offering the customer what they want.

SUMMARY:NI Science Festival - Turing Talk 2022: A Day in the Life of a Smart City with Prof Julie A. McCann
DESCRIPTION:Part of the IET EngTalk and BCS Lecture Series \nWith the recent COP26 held in Glasgow\, sustainability and climate adaption is on everyone’s minds. The main outcome of this has been an agreement to strengthen 2030 targets by the end of 2022. This talk will discuss the role of the Internet of Things\, specifically sensor-based technologies\, in both providing data to better understand resource usage for optimization and reduction\, as well as providing ground truths to track those targets are being met. To do this this technology needs to be embedded in our transport\, our factories\, our homes even\, and with this brings a new set of challenges around privacy and security. Indeed\, such systems are core to building the Digital Twins that drive decision making\, but what happens when such systems go wrong? Prof Julie A. McCann will explore this and potential solutions to such scenarios and will illustrate where the technologies are heading with a future look. \nAbout \nProfessor Julie A McCann heads up Adaptive Emergent Systems Engineering (AESE) in the Dept of Computing where she works with a highly multi-disciplinary group of Post Docs and PhD students from a broad spectra of backgrounds. She leads the Resilient and Robust Infrastructure challenge part of the Data Centric Engineering theme in the Alan Turing Institute\, she is PI for the NRF funded Singapore Eco Cities initiative\, and is Deputy Director of PeTraS and therein leads the Logistics 4.0 project with the Tate Modern\, ARM and Ordinance Survey. She is Imperial PI for the EPSRC Science of Sensing Systems Software (S4) programme grant. Until recently she was the Co-director of the Intel Collaborative Research Institute on Sustainable Connected Cities\, the Co-PI of the NEC Smart Water Lab\, and Director of the cross-Imperial Smart Connected Futures Network. \nShe has chaired and remains actively involved with the field’s top conferences (including Infocom\, Sensys\, IPSN\, and EWSN) and is an Associated Editor for IoT-J. She currently delivers the Pervasive Computing teaching module and in the past she lectured Operating Systems courses. She was chair of the Department of Computing Equality and Diversity committee (2018-2021)\, is a Fellow of the British Computer Society\, a Chartered Engineer and consults on computer-based futures for TV and Film .

SUMMARY:Innovative Digital Technologies in Continuous Improvement
DESCRIPTION:Capturing data to support decision making is crucial to modern continuous improvement programmes\, but as the volume of data grows exponentially\, powerful analytical and visualisation techniques are needed to bring the data to life. This area of innovation is progressing at a fast pace\, and we will highlight the significant benefits of dedicated solutions in this technology area. The benefits of incremental gains compound over time\, so the sooner you start the greater the performance gains over slower rivals.

SUMMARY:Innovative Digital Technologies in Supply Chain
DESCRIPTION:This event looks at how manufacturers can gather\, process and present data from the factory in sufficient detail to give customers visibility of their orders. Of course\, this level of granularity is also extremely helpful to the factory management team\, to fully understand work in progress and allow management time to be spent proactively maximising customer experience\, rather than spend time on reactive expediting and fire fighting after problems comes to light.

SUMMARY:Innovative Digital Technologies in Net Zero
DESCRIPTION:This event will be look at how manufacturers can gather\, process\, present and analyse data from throughout the factory to enable rigorous management decisions regarding energy reduction. This can be for direct cost reduction through lower energy bills or in order to reduce the carbon footprint of manufactured goods which comes under increasing scrutiny from consumers. Continued measurement and monitoring can support and confirm capex investment decisions over time\, and continued trend analysis will drive further resource savings. \nFeaturing: \n\n\nKaty Davies (Managing Director\, Camden Boss)\, Vanessa Macdougall (Co-Founder\, xtonnes)\, Prof Steve Evans (Director of Research in Industrial Sustainability\, Institute for Manufacturing (IfM))\, Alan Howard (Design and Manufacturing Lead\, IET) and Ravi Gidoomal (Director\, Edge Digital Manufacturing)

SUMMARY:5G in Transport & Logistics: 5G 101
DESCRIPTION:5G\, 25% better than 4G\, right? No. 5G can be marketed as the next generation of mobile tech but fundamental changes in the way 5G networks are built and work make it an extremely powerful digital transformation tool. On one level it’s fibre (gigabyte) connectivity delivered wirelessly\, great for the Enhanced Mobile Broadband experience now being rolled out by the Public Networks. \nDig deeper and the flexibility\, power and control 5G brings to managing data make it an eminently deployable means to increase productivity\, reduce waste and contribute to the bottom line. \nThis session is a (mostly) non-technical look at 5G. Where it differs from what’s come before\, the capabilities it unlocks\, the role of Public and Private Networks. It will be of interest to anyone wanting to know how 5G can be applied in Transport & Logistics. \nKTN is a delivery partner for UK5G\nUK5G is the national innovation network dedicated to the promotion of research\, collaboration and the industrial application of 5G in the UK. Its mission is to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of global 5G development. KTN is a delivery partner for UK5G.

SUMMARY:Building the Smarter State
DESCRIPTION:The seventh edition of our flagship public services conference\, Building the Smarter State\, will take place on 22 September. \nFor the last six years the conference has successfully attracted digital leaders from across the breadth of public and the private sectors to showcase how technology is shaping today’s and tomorrow’s public services – helping to build a smarter state. \nIt’s now ten years since the launch of the report that led to the founding of the Government Digital Service. The decade since has witnessed both significant disruption and progression in public sector transformation. As well as the establishing of GDS\, we’ve had the introduction of the Cloud First policy\, the creation of the Digital Marketplace\, the launch of the Local Digital Declaration and a new Local Digital Collaboration Unit\, a renewed emphasis on user centricity and the disaggregation of large IT and technology contracts. All of which helped propel the UK to the top spot in the UN’s E-Government Rankings in 2016. \nAlongside past pressures and the legacy of COVID-19\, 2021 has seen changes to public procurement\, key leaders in the heart of Government brought in to supercharge digitization\, and efforts to address the legacy estate\, harness data and develop capability across the public sector. \nIt feels like the UK is on the cusp of the next big leap forward in digital Government\, and it is crucial we get the first steps on that journey right. At this year’s conference senior leaders from the public sector and the civil service will explore the key issues and technologies that will usher in the next decade of public service transformation. \nEvent Information \nDate: 22 September \nLocation: Online \nTiming: 10:00 – 17:00 (please note timings may change slightly as the agenda is finalised) \nTickets:  \ntechUK member rate (standard) – £80+VAT \ntechUK member rate (SME) – £30+VAT \nNon-member rate – £200+VAT \nPublic Sector – this event is free to attend for public sector delegates\, if you have any issues registering please contact events@techUK.org.
