SUMMARY:Engineering for Carbon Zero 2022 - A Global PhD Conference
DESCRIPTION:The UK-China Consortium of Engineering Education & Research (UCEER)\, in which Queen’s University Belfast is the leading UK institution\, is holding the first Global PhD Conference on ‘Engineering for Carbon Zero’ (UCEER22-ECZ) online in April 2022. The conference is jointly organised by PhD students from Queen’s University Belfast and Tianjin University\, China. PhD students from both institutions are the main organisers for this conference and PhD students or Masters students from around the world are invited to attend and present their latest research. \nA large amount of carbon emissions and the resulting greenhouse effect are believed to be closely related to extreme weather and atmospheric environment. \nSince the second industrial revolution\, the extensive use of fossil energy has led to a sharp increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. With the holding of the International Climate Conference and the recognition of this topic by the international community\, reducing carbon emissions and controlling global warming has become an important topic in the 21st century. Many countries have pledged to achieve carbon neutrality\, or carbon zero\, by the middle of the 21st century in order to cope with the intensifying climate change. There are a large number of research and technical challenges that need to be solved urgently\, including the use of sustainable energy\, carbon capture\, carbon utilization\, carbon storage and so on. \n

SUMMARY:The Future of the European Hydrogen Economy
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will explore the potential of the European hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in achieving a carbon-neutral economy in Europe by 2050. Green hydrogen also has many possible applications in the Irish context\, and while currently representing a modest fraction of the global energy mix\, projections indicate that clean hydrogen could meet approximately 25% of the world’s energy demand by mid-century. \nIn recent years\, several European countries\, including Portugal and Germany\, have issued comprehensive national hydrogen strategies. These frameworks provide critical insights for Ireland as policymakers consider the role for green hydrogen in meeting the state’s climate and energy targets. In this session\, three international experts will explore the potential role of green hydrogen as the EU transitions to a carbon-neutral future. \nAbout the Speakers:   \nDr Isabel Cabrita is Professor of Energy Solutions at the Institute of Education and Sciences\, Lisbon. She also serves as a Researcher at CERENA\, a Portuguese research and technological development institute which specialises in innovative and sustainable energy solutions. From 2015-2021\, she was Head of Research Directorate-General of Energy and Geology\, Portugal. In this role\, Dr Cabrita oversaw the implementation of the Portuguese Energy and Climate Plan\, and Portugal’s National Hydrogen Strategy. Dr Cabrita has produced more than 300 publications and served as guest editor of an edition of Energies in 2021. \nFranz Lehner is Head of International Cooperation at NOW GmbH\, the German Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. NOW GmbH is responsible for the coordination and management of the German Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology and the Electromobility Model Regions programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany. An engineer by training\, Mr Lehner has more than 10 years of professional experience focusing on hydrogen\, fuel cells\, renewable fuels and electric mobility. Before joining NOW in early 2021\, Mr Lehner was Managing Consultant at the international energy transition consulting firm E4tech in Lausanne\, Switzerland. From 2014-2019\, he co-authored the annual Fuel Cell Industry Review published by E4Tech\, the global benchmark report in this sector. \nShiva Dustdar is Head of Innovation Finance Advisory at the European Investment Bank. A leading innovation finance expert with over 25 years of experience at J.P. Morgan\, Fitch Ratings and now at EIB\, she specialises in identifying future investment opportunities and developing new business and market opportunities to finance the transition to a green and digital economy. SUMMARY:Innovative Digital Technologies in Supply Chain
DESCRIPTION:This event looks at how manufacturers can gather\, process and present data from the factory in sufficient detail to give customers visibility of their orders. Of course\, this level of granularity is also extremely helpful to the factory management team\, to fully understand work in progress and allow management time to be spent proactively maximising customer experience\, rather than spend time on reactive expediting and fire fighting after problems comes to light.

SUMMARY:Beyond Glasgow: What impact will COP26 have on Europe’s green dreams?
DESCRIPTION:During the first half of November\, international leaders gathered in Glasgow for COP26\, the UN climate conference. The meeting was identified by many as critical to determining whether the world can realistically meet the targets of the 2015 Paris Agreement\, and thereby mitigate the increasingly catastrophic effects of climate change. As signalled by Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen\, “the EU will bring to Glasgow the highest level of ambition”.  Yet it remains to be seen if others will follow\, including its own member states\, and commit to join forces and resources in a common approach. \nEither way\, the COP26 outcomes will be followed with keen interest by European research and innovation communities. Will COP26 deliver a major boost for the Green Deal\, with its technology-driven transformation of industry?  Will it provide a new framing and direction of travel for Horizon Europe\, with 35% of its budget committed to climate-related topics?  Will it unleash a new wave of climate innovation financing?  And will it open more doors to international cooperation and alliances\, both scientific and governmental\, in pursuit of solutions that will make a measurable difference? \nIn this public\, livestreamed debate\, Science|Business will bring together leading figures from the worlds of policy\, science and industry to reflect on the outcomes from Glasgow\, and to discuss their implications for European science and technology in the months ahead.

SUMMARY:Reaching net zero – is the tax system ready?
DESCRIPTION:How we are taxed will be crucial to how government pays for net zero. It can use the tax system to incentivise sustainable choices by businesses and consumers as well as disincentivise harmful ones. But government revenues will also fall as people and businesses adapt their behaviour to reduce carbon emissions\, with the shift to electric vehicles set to eliminate fuel duties. \nSo what changes are needed to ensure the tax system raises revenue to fund public interventions\, redistributes the costs of getting to net zero\, and shores up the tax take as fuel duties decline? \nThis event will take place after a busy autumn of net zero strategies\, a budget and COP26. It will ask how the government should adapt the tax system to reach net zero and whether the budget was a missed opportunity\, look at the steps being taken in other countries\, and set out how to overcome the barriers – political and otherwise – to reform. \nThe panel to discuss these issues will be: \n\nRt Hon David Gauke\, Head of Public Policy at Macfarlanes LLP and former Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nJames Murray MP\, Shadow Financial Secretary to the Treasury\nChris Stark\, Chief Executive of the Committee on Climate Change\nAmanda Tickel\, Head of Tax & Trade Policy for Deloitte UK\n\nThe event will be chaired by Dr Gemma Tetlow\, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government.

SUMMARY:Ask the engineers: Is hydrogen the silver bullet that will help achieve net zero?
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT\nThe government recently set out its strategy for developing a thriving low carbon hydrogen sector in the UK to meet its stated ambition to achieve 5GW of low carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030. \nHydrogen is an energy vector rather than a source of energy – once produced from an energy source\, it can be stored and transported. Despite rapid technological advances and research\, there is still much discussion about how hydrogen should be produced and how it should be used. The third event in our Ask the Engineers series will assess the potential of hydrogen\, and its challenges. \nFrom hydrogen startups to big energy companies\, how much difference do engineers think hydrogen can make to the drive towards net zero? \nSpeakers\n\nChair: Alok Jha\, Science and Technology Correspondent\, The Economist\nDr Enass Abo-Hamed\, Chief Executive Officer\, H2GoPower\nProfessor Rebecca Lunn MBE FREng FRSE\, Professor of Civil Engineering\, University of Strathclyde\n\nMore panellists to be confirmed soon.  \nSupported by:\nARUP as the technology partner of the Ask the engineers series. \nTickets\nThis event is free of charge but registration is required. After registering\, you will receive an email that contains further details on joining the online event. If you have any questions\, please contact Amy Stratton\, Events Manager at the Royal Academy of Engineering. \nEngineering Zero\nThis event series is part of the Academy’s campaign Engineering Zero\, which aims to bring the engineering profession together to advance engineering’s contribution to net zero\, working in partnership with the National Engineering Policy Centre and our global networks. SUMMARY:Net Zero in Medicines Manufacturing: Measuring and Reporting Carbon Footprint
DESCRIPTION:In the run up to COP 26\, KTN is holding a webinar: Net Zero in Medicines Manufacturing: Measuring and Reporting Carbon Footprint. \nThe obligations around reporting carbon outputs are becoming increasingly challenging for all sizes of companies\, as global net zero target deadlines draw ever closer and customers introduce sustainable procurement directives. \nThis webinar is aimed at medicines manufacturers to learn about systems and tools for measuring and reporting on Scope 1\, 2 and 3 carbon outputs. Manufacturers of medical technologies and organisations involved in supply chain are also very welcome. This is particularly applicable to SMEs who want to find out more about carbon reporting structures and tools from organisations who have established systems. \nThis webinar will feature presentations and discussion from GSK\, AstraZeneca and Pfizer on reporting and science-based targets\, and why they are important\, and what are the external demands. We will feature practical application case studies on Scope 1 & 2\, and explore the challenges and opportunities to decarbonise the whole value chain (Scope 3). There will also be a presentation from NHS on forthcoming supplier guidelines. \nThe webinar is hosted by KTN Medicines Manufacturing Challenge Community in partnership with Innovate UK\, Medicines Manufacturing Industry Partnership and Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry. \nFor any queries about this event please get in touch with KTN’s Karen Wilkinson.\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:What should COP26 aim to achieve?
DESCRIPTION:PUBLIC EVENT\nAs delegations from UN member states prepare to gather in Glasgow in November to accelerate collective action towards preventing an irreversible climate catastrophe\, we ask a panel of expert engineers what the COP26 summit needs to achieve. \nThe G7 meeting in Cornwall re-affirmed rich countries’ pledge to protect the planet\, but detailed actions have yet to be announced. \nThe number of governments worldwide setting net zero targets is a positive sign but how will these targets be achieved in practice? The engineering profession is a massive part of that “how” and engineers are actively developing ways to help reduce emissions. \nSo what do engineers want to hear from the summit? \nSpeakers\n\nChair: Alok Jha\, Science and Technology Correspondent\, The Economist\nDervilla Mitchell CBE FREng\, Deputy Chair\, Arup\nProfessor Sir Jim McDonald FREng FRSE\, President\, Royal Academy of Engineering\nOlivia Sweeney\, Consultant\, Resource Futures and Black and Green Ambassador\n\nMore panellists to be confirmed soon. \nSupported by\nARUP as the technology partner of the Ask the engineers series. \nTickets\nThis event is free of charge but registration is required.
