SUMMARY:Power Up - An Engineer's Adventure into Sustainable Energy
DESCRIPTION:We rarely think about the energy systems that prop up our existence. With hot water\, lighting and digital entertainment all available at the flick of a switch\, it’s easy to underestimate the vast global network that makes these things possible. \nGrowing up in Iraq\, Yasmin Ali regularly experienced power cuts – ironic for a country rich in oil and sunshine. Now as an engineer working in energy\, Yasmin has a deep appreciation for what these resources mean for our lives. \nIn Power Up she takes us on a journey across the globe to reveal the bigger picture\, from solar panel farms shimmering in the desert to power stations hidden deep in the mountains. We discover where we get energy from\, how it is moved and used around the world – and why we need to understand the whole system if we want to transition towards a clean\, green future. \nPower Up is a definitive picture of the intricate world that humanity has built\, and a rallying cry to face the challenges of climate change using the power at our fingertips.

SUMMARY:Space-Enabled Net Zero by 2050: New Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:COP26 concluded with The Glasgow Climate Pact\, signed by all participating nations\, building on the significant progress and momentum since the Paris Agreement in 2015. Everyone must now act to deliver on the commitments made at COP26. \nIn the weeks leading up to COP26\, the UK published its Net Zero Strategy\, which outlined its legislated plans to reach net zero emissions by 2050 and fighting climate change with Space technology was one of the items in the Ten Point Plan in the National Space Strategy. Space technology touches all sectors\, and the Space ecosystem has a critical part to play in empowering solutions for climate change and enabling the UK to realise its Net Zero Strategy. \nThis webinar is the second of a two-part series that will present several concepts on the subject of ‘Space-Enabled Net Zero’\, exploring how Space can help us respond to the climate challenges discussed during COP26 and limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. In this second webinar\, we will cover the topic of new service delivery and new opportunities. An invited panel will discuss and debate emerging technologies\, opportunities\, challenges\, and impacts surrounding this topic. Participants are also invited to pitch a single slide lightning talk on a concept relating to Space-enabled net zero for discussion and debate.

SUMMARY:Circular Economy Innovation Network Launch Event
DESCRIPTION:The Circular Economy Innovation Network aims to create stronger\, more collaborative\, and resilient industries working together to achieve net zero through circular innovation. \nBy building new sector communities\, focussed on circular design\, circular business models\, and circular recovery KTN are empowering industry members to come together for the first time to co-create a shared pathway for impact in achieving net zero through circular innovation. \nThey are launching three new challenge communities (wool\, aluminium\, and chemicals)\, that will collaborate to co-create a Circular Innovation Action Plan for their sector. This action plan will identify the key sectoral barriers to net zero and how the circular economy can be used as a framework to overcome these barriers. \nAs part of this process\, communities will agree on two challenges they want to tackle together. Using their Innovation Exchange platform\, KTN will seek to find potential solutions and broker new relationships between established industry and innovators. \nKTN are building the Circular Economy Innovation Network to bring together stakeholders across the wool\, aluminium\, and chemicals value chain to explore how innovation can enhance the role of wool\, aluminium\, and chemicals in the UK. Here they begin to explore the challenges facing the three industries in the UK and consider where innovation could have a role to play in supporting producers\, processors and end users. \nThey will be holding the first launch event online on 26th April 2022\, 11:00 – 12:30\, featuring three breakout rooms on the 3 sectors\, with Q&A. \nJoin KTN at this introductory event on the 26th April at 11am to find out how you can get involved in exploring: \n\nHow we could use wool\, aluminium and chemicals in novel ways to benefit the sector\nWays we could use resources more efficiently across the value chain\n\nThis event is part of the Circular Innovation Network\, which looks at alternatives to using high carbon materials to support UK industries in reaching net zero. DESCRIPTION:The UK-China Consortium of Engineering Education & Research (UCEER)\, in which Queen’s University Belfast is the leading UK institution\, is holding the first Global PhD Conference on ‘Engineering for Carbon Zero’ (UCEER22-ECZ) online in April 2022. The conference is jointly organised by PhD students from Queen’s University Belfast and Tianjin University\, China. PhD students from both institutions are the main organisers for this conference and PhD students or Masters students from around the world are invited to attend and present their latest research. \nA large amount of carbon emissions and the resulting greenhouse effect are believed to be closely related to extreme weather and atmospheric environment. \nSince the second industrial revolution\, the extensive use of fossil energy has led to a sharp increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. With the holding of the International Climate Conference and the recognition of this topic by the international community\, reducing carbon emissions and controlling global warming has become an important topic in the 21st century. Many countries have pledged to achieve carbon neutrality\, or carbon zero\, by the middle of the 21st century in order to cope with the intensifying climate change. There are a large number of research and technical challenges that need to be solved urgently\, including the use of sustainable energy\, carbon capture\, carbon utilization\, carbon storage and so on. \n

SUMMARY:The Future of the European Hydrogen Economy
DESCRIPTION:This seminar will explore the potential of the European hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in achieving a carbon-neutral economy in Europe by 2050. Green hydrogen also has many possible applications in the Irish context\, and while currently representing a modest fraction of the global energy mix\, projections indicate that clean hydrogen could meet approximately 25% of the world’s energy demand by mid-century. \nIn recent years\, several European countries\, including Portugal and Germany\, have issued comprehensive national hydrogen strategies. These frameworks provide critical insights for Ireland as policymakers consider the role for green hydrogen in meeting the state’s climate and energy targets. In this session\, three international experts will explore the potential role of green hydrogen as the EU transitions to a carbon-neutral future. \nAbout the Speakers:   \nDr Isabel Cabrita is Professor of Energy Solutions at the Institute of Education and Sciences\, Lisbon. She also serves as a Researcher at CERENA\, a Portuguese research and technological development institute which specialises in innovative and sustainable energy solutions. From 2015-2021\, she was Head of Research Directorate-General of Energy and Geology\, Portugal. In this role\, Dr Cabrita oversaw the implementation of the Portuguese Energy and Climate Plan\, and Portugal’s National Hydrogen Strategy. Dr Cabrita has produced more than 300 publications and served as guest editor of an edition of Energies in 2021. \nFranz Lehner is Head of International Cooperation at NOW GmbH\, the German Organisation for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. NOW GmbH is responsible for the coordination and management of the German Innovation Programme for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology and the Electromobility Model Regions programme of the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure of Germany. An engineer by training\, Mr Lehner has more than 10 years of professional experience focusing on hydrogen\, fuel cells\, renewable fuels and electric mobility. Before joining NOW in early 2021\, Mr Lehner was Managing Consultant at the international energy transition consulting firm E4tech in Lausanne\, Switzerland. From 2014-2019\, he co-authored the annual Fuel Cell Industry Review published by E4Tech\, the global benchmark report in this sector. \nShiva Dustdar is Head of Innovation Finance Advisory at the European Investment Bank. A leading innovation finance expert with over 25 years of experience at J.P. Morgan\, Fitch Ratings and now at EIB\, she specialises in identifying future investment opportunities and developing new business and market opportunities to finance the transition to a green and digital economy. Ms Dustdar co-founded the European High Yield Association (EHYA)\, which is now part of the Association for Financial Markets in Europe (AFME). In 2006\, she was listed in the ‘Top 50 Women in Credit’ by Credit Magazine. Ms Dustdar Shiva holds a BA in Economics from Columbia University and an Executive MBA from London Business School.
