SUMMARY:Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI Autumn School
DESCRIPTION:The Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI Autumn School will be held from 24-28 October 2022\, in person at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre in Ulster University\, Magee campus. There will also be an option for online attendance. \nApplication deadline: 1st September 2022 (online and in-person). \nDecision for in-person applicants (limited to 40): 9th September 2022. \nBackground\nThere have been rapid advancements and investments in research and development in brain sciences\, neurotechnology\, neural data modelling and neuro-inspired artificial intelligence (AI). \nThese advancements have not only led to deeper understanding of brain functions and disorders\, but also the development and application of powerful AI and machine-learning algorithms that affect our everyday life. In fact\, historically\, AI was inspired by how intelligence arises from the brain. \nThe Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (CN3) Autumn School aims to train the next generation of researchers on these state-of-the-art developments. This short course will touch on the areas of computational neuroscience\, neural data science\, neurotechnology and neuro-inspired AI. \nThe School is unique in that important and timely topics either not delivered in other Schools or taught courses\, or delivered only individually\, will be delivered here in an integrated way\, from pedagogical to advanced levels. These topics include computational modelling of neural-glial systems\, neuromodulators\, cognition\, neurotechnology\, neuromorphic computing\, self-repaired intelligent machines\, spiking neural networks and cognitive robotics. Mathematical foundations\, coding exercises\, ethics and entrepreneurship will also be covered. SUMMARY:AI Lab Skunkworks: Using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Join AI Lab Skunkworks to learn how they have been experimenting with using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital. \nCT scans are used in the detection and understanding of disease. Radiologists currently manually compare two CT scans\, taken at different dates\, to see whether a patient’s disease has improved\, deteriorated or remained unchanged. \nThis 12-week project investigated the AI techniques that could be applied to the problem and sought to provide a proof of concept (a feasibility study) about whether it was possible to identify organs and growths\, report on any changes and highlight areas of concern to the radiologist. \nThe AI Lab Skunkworks works on demonstrating the potential of AI through proof-of-concepts and upskilling the workforce through a knowledge-sharing model. We help healthcare organisations apply AI to their problems through rapid\, agile\, iterative projects. DESCRIPTION:A session on careers advice as part of the Skills 4 Scientists summer training series.\n\n\nDescription\nThis event is part of the virtual Skills 4 Scientists series run by the Artificial Intelligence for Scientific Discovery Network+ (AI3SD) and the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS). \nThis session will provide insight into potential different career paths\, including a panel session with ECRs talking about their different careers and a discussion on what the long term career of a chemist can look like. \nWho is this event for?\nThis series of virtual events is primarily aimed at late stage undergraduate or early stage postgraduate students who are studying a physical sciences subject. However\, it is open to any attendees who wish to join if the subject matter is of interest to you! Gale in 2010 studying supramolecular host:guest chemistry. She continued her post-doctoral research between this group and Dstl (Porton Down – UK) until 2015 when she moved to the University of Kent (UK) as the Caldin research fellow. In 2016 she was awarded a permanent lectureship position at that same institution\, which has since been followed by her promotion to Reader in Supramolecular Chemistry and Director of Innovation and Enterprise for the School of Physical Sciences in 2019. In 2020 she was awarded a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship\, developing novel cell surface active therapeutics and drug adjuvants. Her research currently focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to applying supramolecular chemistry to solve real-world problems. \nJo Grundy graduated from Exeter University with a BSc in Chemistry in 1996\, qualified as a teacher with a PGCE from Durham University then taught at Varndean School for a couple of years in Brighton\, before doing an MSc in 1999\, then DPhil in Organometallic chemistry at Sussex University. Between 2004 and 2006 I worked with Prof. Mathey at UC Riverside\, before coming back to teach at a school in Duisburg Germany. I returned to the UK and taught chemistry and maths to A level\, at Farnborough Sixth Form\, then the Isle of Wight College\, Barton Peveril and Itchen College. In 2018\, did a second MSc in Artificial Intelligence at Southampton University\, then worked as a Teaching Fellow in Computer Science for a year\, before starting in my present job as a Research Fellow in Machine Learning.  \nSamuel Munday is a Research Assistant at the University of Southampton. He is currently part of the ICURe programme\, and his research focus is in the digital economy space\, interviewing and working with industry to assess the need for systems that can automatically curate and contextualise information from paper records. Samuel graduated from the University of Southampton in 2018 with an MChem in Chemistry and Maths\, and prior to undertaking his recent position\, he worked as a Research Technician at the University\, and was involved with a variety of different projects. He led the development and implementation of a machine learning platform for the polymeric materials sector\, aiding them in bringing new products to market faster. He has also developed and helped deliver a Python programming course for undergraduate Chemists as well as being involved in assessing the ethical implications of implementing AI and data sharing across the food supply chain.  \nSamantha Kanza is an Enterprise Fellow at the University of Southampton. She completed her MEng in Computer Science at the University of Southampton and then worked for BAE Systems Applied Intelligence for a year before returning to do an iPhD in Web Science (in Computer Science and Chemistry)\, which focused on Semantic Tagging of Scientific Documents and Electronic Lab Notebooks. She was awarded her PhD in April 2018. Samantha works in the interdisciplinary research area of applying computer science techniques to the scientific domain\, specifically through the use of semantic web technologies and artificial intelligence. Her research includes looking at electronic lab notebooks and smart laboratories\, to improve the digitization and knowledge management of the scientific record using semantic web technologies; and using IoT devices in the laboratory. She has also worked on a number of interdisciplinary Semantic Web projects in different domains\, including agriculture\, chemistry and the social sciences. \nNicola Knight is an Enterprise Research Fellow at the University of Southampton working on the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS). She completed her Masters of Chemistry (MChem) at the University of Southampton previously before undertaking a PhD in Chemistry under the supervision of Professor Jeremy Frey. Her PhD focused on the interface between Chemistry and Computing with research in chemical modelling\, remote experiments and the implementation of IoT technology in scientific research. Nicola’s current research interests are in the use of computing in scientific labs and notetaking with particular interest in IoT technologies and streamlining the research process. \nKevin Parker started his career with a bang by blowing up a laboratory at the University of Cambridge while studying for his Ph.D. Some 40 years later\, he runs a training and consultancy company helping start-up companies and individuals achieve their promise. He has completed 500 assignments in this area since 1995. His company’s clients have included 19 Russell Group Universities\, the Royal Society of Edinburgh\, departments of both the UK and Scottish Government\, and the Episcopal Church of Scotland. \nThe Skills 4 Scientists series\nThis series is a joint venture organised between the Artificial Intelligence for Scientific Discovery Network+ (AI3SD) and the Physical Sciences Data-Science Service (PSDS)\, running alongside the AI3SD summer internship program. This series of events will run over the summer and aims to educate and improve scientists’ skills in a range of areas including research data management\, python\, version control\, ethics\, and career development.  \nThis series is primarily aimed at final year undergraduates / early stage PhD students. Although of course anyone interested in any of the topics is welcome to join! \nThis series starts on the 7th July 2021\, and runs every other Wednesday and Thursday afternoon until the end of August. Each seminar session will commence at 14:00 and typically finish around 17:00. The final event of the series will be a 2 day poster symposia where attendees will be invited to present their research to a range of experts from industry and academia. \nTo find out about the other events in the series visit https://www.ai3sd.org/skills-4-scientists/ \nEvent Access Details\nThis event will be run virtually via the Zoom video conferencing platform. This can be accessed via either a computer or mobile device.  \nIn most of the session we will ask that attendees keep their camera off and microphones muted to reduce bandwidth and background noise. In this interactive session we will be using the Moral-IT cards to prompt discussion and thought on the ethical implications that a user’s research can have\, and how they can consider these angles in their experiment and research design. The session will be introduced by Dr Peter Craigon from the University of Nottingham and discussion groups will be facilitated by members of our organising team. The Moral-IT Deck: A Tool for Ethics by Design. arXiv:2007.07514 . \nPeter Craigon is a Research Fellow in Ethics\, Legislation and Engagement in Food and Agricultural Innovation within the Future Food Beacon of Excellence at the University of Nottingham. He is working with Professor Kate Millar and Professor Richard Hyde on developing tools to encourage ethical engagement and regulatory responsiveness for researchers working in food and agricultural innovation and beyond. He previously worked at the Horizon Digital Economy Research Institute at the University of Nottingham developing a tool to enable ethical design of IT based technologies and also at the University of Nottingham School of Veterinary Medicine and Science researching dog behaviour.
