SUMMARY:AICON 2022
DESCRIPTION:AI Con Hosted by Kainos will investigate the adoption of Artificial Intelligence across society. As acceptance of the technology continues to grow\, this year is about considering what’s needed to integrate AI responsibly and sustainably into all avenues of business and public life. \nWhat’s needed to further public trust\, and how we can mitigate any questions of risk or threat will be the underlying message when we return in December 2022. We know\, through the now mainstream use of transformative technologies such as electricity\, aviation\, and automobiles\, that public sentiment can and does change both with time and the continued evolution of technology. This can be assisted by identifying sensible safeguards and committing as a sector to education. \nIt is in this vein that we will convene the AI ecosystem\, including those involved in application\, policy\, regulation\, and every senior role in between. With input from global experts in the field\, AI Con Hosted by Kainos is where crucial conversations around the need to foster diversity and inclusion across the sector\, build moral foundations that underpin it\, and govern the potential for societal harm within AI will take place. \nFollowing this new approach in 2022\, the event will get to the heart of AI’s relationship with data usage and privacy and will allow us to determine a way forward in line with policy activity across Europe\, the UK\, and the US.

SUMMARY:Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI Autumn School
DESCRIPTION:The Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI Autumn School will be held from 24-28 October 2022\, in person at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre in Ulster University\, Magee campus. There will also be an option for online attendance. \nApplication deadline: 1st September 2022 (online and in-person). \nDecision for in-person applicants (limited to 40): 9th September 2022. \nBackground\nThere have been rapid advancements and investments in research and development in brain sciences\, neurotechnology\, neural data modelling and neuro-inspired artificial intelligence (AI). \nThese advancements have not only led to deeper understanding of brain functions and disorders\, but also the development and application of powerful AI and machine-learning algorithms that affect our everyday life. In fact\, historically\, AI was inspired by how intelligence arises from the brain. \nThe Computational Neuroscience\, Neurotechnology and Neuro-inspired AI (CN3) Autumn School aims to train the next generation of researchers on these state-of-the-art developments. This short course will touch on the areas of computational neuroscience\, neural data science\, neurotechnology and neuro-inspired AI. \nThe School is unique in that important and timely topics either not delivered in other Schools or taught courses\, or delivered only individually\, will be delivered here in an integrated way\, from pedagogical to advanced levels. These topics include computational modelling of neural-glial systems\, neuromodulators\, cognition\, neurotechnology\, neuromorphic computing\, self-repaired intelligent machines\, spiking neural networks and cognitive robotics. Mathematical foundations\, coding exercises\, ethics and entrepreneurship will also be covered. Moreover\, although neural computation and neuro-inspired AI research are conducted in the island of Ireland\, there is very little relevant training and taught courses\, especially for early career researchers\, in the region; this School aims to bridge this gap. \nFor  enquiries\, please contact KongFatt via e-mail (k.wong-lin@ulster.ac.uk).

SUMMARY:AI Lab Skunkworks: Using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital
DESCRIPTION:Join AI Lab Skunkworks to learn how they have been experimenting with using AI to identify tissue growth from CT scans with George Eliot Hospital. \nCT scans are used in the detection and understanding of disease. Radiologists currently manually compare two CT scans\, taken at different dates\, to see whether a patient’s disease has improved\, deteriorated or remained unchanged. \nThis 12-week project investigated the AI techniques that could be applied to the problem and sought to provide a proof of concept (a feasibility study) about whether it was possible to identify organs and growths\, report on any changes and highlight areas of concern to the radiologist. \nThe AI Lab Skunkworks works on demonstrating the potential of AI through proof-of-concepts and upskilling the workforce through a knowledge-sharing model. We help healthcare organisations apply AI to their problems through rapid\, agile\, iterative projects. By running an open call\, we help develop proof of concepts through a 12 week process usually helped by a supplier.  We’re excited to present the results of our last project. \nJoin us for this webinar to learn more: \n\nAbout whether AI could be used to identify features in a CT scan and automatically align images to provide radiologists with a quick\, trustworthy support tool that would improve early detection and diagnosis of growths and improve patient outcomes.\nLearn more about the current problem radiologists face\,\nThe AI technique the Roke team used.\nChallenges faced and lessons learned through this project.

SUMMARY:5G in Transport & Logistics: 5G 101
DESCRIPTION:5G\, 25% better than 4G\, right? No. 5G can be marketed as the next generation of mobile tech but fundamental changes in the way 5G networks are built and work make it an extremely powerful digital transformation tool. On one level it’s fibre (gigabyte) connectivity delivered wirelessly\, great for the Enhanced Mobile Broadband experience now being rolled out by the Public Networks. \nDig deeper and the flexibility\, power and control 5G brings to managing data make it an eminently deployable means to increase productivity\, reduce waste and contribute to the bottom line. \nThis session is a (mostly) non-technical look at 5G. Where it differs from what’s come before\, the capabilities it unlocks\, the role of Public and Private Networks. It will be of interest to anyone wanting to know how 5G can be applied in Transport & Logistics. \nKTN is a delivery partner for UK5G\nUK5G is the national innovation network dedicated to the promotion of research\, collaboration and the industrial application of 5G in the UK. Its mission is to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of global 5G development. KTN is a delivery partner for UK5G.

In recent years we have seen a rise in popularity of one aspect of the conference: the industry case studies. These have presented AI as it is actually implemented out there in the real world\, with all the triumphs and challenges that brings. \nBuilding on this success\, we are pleased to present Real Artificial Intelligence\, a series of meetings showcasing practical applications of AI. \nWe have aimed the event less at deep AI specialists and more at those who may be interested in understanding what AI can offer\, and what it is doing right now. The event will feature talks from leading exponents and case studies outlining practical applications of AI from a wide range of application domains. Plenty of time has been allowed in the programme for discussion. \n\n\nTHIS EVENT IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: \nBCS-SGAI \nhttp://bcs-sgai.org/realai2021/?section=home \n\n\nOur events are for adults aged 16 years and over. \nFor overseas delegates who wish to attend the event\, please note that BCS does not issue invitation letters.

SUMMARY:AI for Governance and Governance of AI
DESCRIPTION:How can we safely exploit and govern AI?\n\n\nSPEAKER\nMike Small of KuppingerCole \nAGENDA\n\n\n18:15 – Room Opens \n18.30 – Presentation \n19.30 – Close \n\n\nSYNOPSIS \nHow can we safely exploit and govern AI? \nArtificial Intelligence is a hot topic and many organizations are looking to exploit it\, but there are many concerns around the impact this will have on society. The concept of AI is not new\, but cloud computing has provided the access to data and computing power needed to turn it into a practical reality. \nHowever\, despite some concerns\, the current state of AI is still a long way from the Sci-Fi portrayal of a threat to humanity. Machine Learning technologies provide significantly improved capabilities to analyse large amounts of data. While this poses a threat of “Big Other” it also makes them suitable for spotting patterns and anomalies so\, potentially useful for detecting fraudulent activity\, security breaches and non-compliance. Whatever our concerns\, these technologies will be used by our cyber adversaries. \nArtificial Intelligence is a hot topic and many organizations are looking to exploit it\, but there are many concerns around the impact this will have on society. SUMMARY:Building the Smarter State
DESCRIPTION:The seventh edition of our flagship public services conference\, Building the Smarter State\, will take place on 22 September. \nFor the last six years the conference has successfully attracted digital leaders from across the breadth of public and the private sectors to showcase how technology is shaping today’s and tomorrow’s public services – helping to build a smarter state. \nIt’s now ten years since the launch of the report that led to the founding of the Government Digital Service. The decade since has witnessed both significant disruption and progression in public sector transformation. As well as the establishing of GDS\, we’ve had the introduction of the Cloud First policy\, the creation of the Digital Marketplace\, the launch of the Local Digital Declaration and a new Local Digital Collaboration Unit\, a renewed emphasis on user centricity and the disaggregation of large IT and technology contracts. All of which helped propel the UK to the top spot in the UN’s E-Government Rankings in 2016. \nAlongside past pressures and the legacy of COVID-19\, 2021 has seen changes to public procurement\, key leaders in the heart of Government brought in to supercharge digitization\, and efforts to address the legacy estate\, harness data and develop capability across the public sector. \nIt feels like the UK is on the cusp of the next big leap forward in digital Government\, and it is crucial we get the first steps on that journey right. At this year’s conference senior leaders from the public sector and the civil service will explore the key issues and technologies that will usher in the next decade of public service transformation. \nEvent Information \nDate: 22 September \nLocation: Online \nTiming: 10:00 – 17:00 (please note timings may change slightly as the agenda is finalised) \nTickets:  \ntechUK member rate (standard) – £80+VAT \ntechUK member rate (SME) – £30+VAT \nNon-member rate – £200+VAT \nPublic Sector – this event is free to attend for public sector delegates\, if you have any issues registering please contact events@techUK.org.
