SUMMARY:From seeds to needs: Regenerating ecosystems services to halt the biodiversity crisis
DESCRIPTION:Where can interdisciplinary collaborations with engineering solutions make the largest impact? Apply to participate in the RAEng Frontiers Symposia – if successful you can bid for seed funding to take forward a collaborative project established at the event\, ensuring that partnerships are built to last. \nAttendance at a Frontiers symposia is by invitation only following a rigorous selection process. Applicants can self nominate or nominate an other person for a specific event or make a general application. \nApply to attend – Royal Academy of Engineering (raeng.org.uk) \nThe goal of the symposia is to facilitate introductions and collaboration between outstanding researchers\, innovators and practitioners working in the international development field. \nWhilst working jointly on concepts for engineering for development\, attendees share new techniques and approaches across disciplinary boundaries and build lasting connections. Delegates will be approximately 0-20 years post-doc\, or have equivalent experience in industry\, presenting a great opportunity to establish valuable contacts with the next generation of engineering leaders and beyond. \nSymposium content and themes\nWe face a global biodiversity crisis\, with unprecedented and accelerating rates of species extinctions and degradation of habitats. This will have grave impacts on the worlds human population dependent on the ecosystems services they provide.  However\, biodiversity is a broad theme with many challenges encompassed within it. There is a need to simultaneously identify the major challenges faced (such as those defined by the Sustainable Development Goals) and the areas where interdisciplinary environmental engineering and science can have the greatest impact to maximise the benefits gained relative to costs – “maximising the bang for the buck”. \nIt is recognised that the global biodiversity emergency affects lower- and middle-income countries the hardest. There are potential conflicts between conservation efforts and resource exploitation that can often negatively impact the communities in LMICs and undermine efforts of development. \nThis symposium will scope out those challenges that would most benefit from engineering solutions\, as part of interdisciplinary collaborations\, and explore this within the context of the themes: Marine\, Freshwater and Terrestrial. \nEach theme will be explored from a research\, policy and industry perspective\, facilitating dialogue from a wide range of disciplines\, including engineering\, environmental science and management\, social sciences\, and economics and governance. \nEvent Chairs\nPaul Kemp\, Professor of Ecological Engineering\, University of Southampton\n \nPaul Kemp is a Professor of Ecological Engineering and director of the International Centre for Ecohydraulics Research at University of Southampton and founding editor in chief of the IAHR Journal of Ecohydraulics. As a result of his interest in sustainable infrastructure and the built environment he is also director of the University of Southampton Future Towns Innovation Hub\, the EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Infrastructure Systems\, and the UKCRIC CDT in Sustainable Infrastructure for Cities. \nPaul’s interests relate to the development of more environmentally friendly water\, energy and food systems\, and in particular sustainable fisheries management.  His research focuses on the application of behavioural ecology to understanding and solving challenges in water and energy engineering\, particularly how the physical environment (e.g. hydrodynamics and acoustics) influence the behaviour and physiological performance of fish\, and how manipulation of that environment by engineering means can be used to mitigate for negative impacts of water and energy resource development. Specific applications include fish pass and screening design\, assigning compensation flow regimes\, and improving habitat restoration strategies. \n*Second chair to be announced\n Symposium Format\nVirtual symposium\nDelegates meet and work together on the Frontiers’ virtual platform\, where they watch pre-recorded presentations\, engage in theme related content\, network with other delegates and collaborate on seed funding. \nThis leads to 2 days of live event in the second week where delegates participate in breakout rooms to workshop the ideas being discussed on the platform. \nParticipants are obliged to participate in every session to maximise the opportunity to make new contacts and build collaborative relationships. To ensure there is a balance of formal and informal networking opportunities\, informal networking will be organised. \nPost event funding\nFollowing the symposium\, there will be an opportunity to be awarded up to £20\,000 in seed funding for an idea generated from collaborations created during the event. \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Active Travel Summit
DESCRIPTION:Accelerating the UK’s active travel industry towards Healthy\, Connected and Net Zero places\n\n\nEvent Summary: \nThe Active Travel Summit aims to celebrate and accelerate the UK active travel market. By convening innovators\, city leaders\, transport authorities\, active travel commissioners\, central government\, business leaders and world-leading academics\, we will open a space to explore current blockers and propose new mechanisms to unlock the full potential of active travel to power the shift to healthy\, low carbon mobility. \nFull Event Description: \nTogether with industry and place leaders\, we want to develop an ambitious\, coordinated and directed active travel programme that will grow the UK active travel market and drive jobs\, enterprise\, innovation\, investment\, and trade opportunities. There are many definitions of Active Travel. At the Catapult we take an inclusive approach which broadly covers any means of getting from A to B where your legs\, arms and heart do their fair share of the work. \nThe Active Travel Summit brings together a cross-section of stakeholders vital to accelerating the active travel agenda and unlocking the full potential of the active travel market\, from decision-makers and planners in government\, cities and towns\, through to the investment community\, small and large businesses\, academia\, strategic bodies and not-for-profit organisations. \nThe Summit will feature TeamGB stars like Dame Sarah Storey – Active Travel Commissioner for the Sheffield City Region – and her London equivalent\, Will Norman\, with business leaders like Will Butler Adams from Brompton Bikes\, Arup’s Susan Claris and innovative property developers like Harry Badham and Roger Madelin of Hammerson and British Land respectively. The new Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department for Transport\, Professor Sarah Sharples and Professor Rachel Aldred of the Active Travel Academy will bring to life the UK’s leading role in related fields of science and research. \nThe Connected Places Catapult is taking the lead on accelerating solutions by identifying opportunities and tackling the challenges faced by this high-potential industry. We recognise that the opportunities created by walking\, cycling\, running\, wheeling and scooting in the UK are huge. We can open up new forms of active travel to people across the country\, decarbonise transport\, accelerate net zero\, transform our roads and streets\, create attractive people-friendly places\, address the obesity crisis\, and improve mental health. \nUK businesses are building an enormously diverse range of products and services that make active travel a thriving\, high-growth and forward-facing sector. Given global investment and rapid policy and regulatory shifts at national\, regional and city government level this presents a substantial export potential – cutting across multiple sectors where the UK has a strong global reputation like design\, masterplanning\, engineering\, project finance\, insurance and other high-value consultancy. This is driven by fundamental and applied research and a rapid technology curve\, not least in terms of battery technology and electric mobility. From apps that guide journeys\, bikes that can be carried on trains\, to scooters that can fold under a desk\, e-bikes that flatten the hardest of hills\, and light electric vehicles (LEVs) that can deliver to your door using only pedal power – the UK is at the forefront of the hardware and software of the active travel revolution. This has the potential to thrive and scale in what Prime Minister Boris Johnson has called ‘a new golden age’ in cycling\, walking and active mobility. \n \nWhy Attend \n\nIf you are innovating in the Active Travel market\, we want to find ways to celebrate and showcase your work. We want to give you the space to be inspired and to highlight opportunities with the people who might be able to help. \n\n\nIf you are an investor or an owner of big strategic challenges relating to Active Travel\, we want you to explore the role of Collaborative Research & Development (CR&D) and the innovation market. \n\n\nIf you are a place leader\, transport authority or decision maker\, we want to provide a space for you to explore how you can better leverage the power of the UK’s rich and diverse Active Travel innovation market. You will discuss with peers how you might share requirements\, collectively approach problems or share challenges with the market. \n\nNo matter who you are\, we want you to leave inspired by this celebration of British innovation in Active Travel\, ready to play your part in helping the industry step (and ride) up yet another gear. \n \nAGENDA \n09:15 WELCOME REMARKS \n09:30 ACTIVE TRAVEL: An immense commercial opportunity in a global growth sector \n10:45 LEV-ELLING UP: Light Electric Vehicles (Levs)\, Micromobility\, Sustainable Freight and more as a driver of inclusive growth \n12:30 Networking Lunch \n13:30 BOOSTING ACTIVE TRAVEL R&D: A step and gear change in investment and innovation \n14:45 STEP & GEAR CHANGE: Design-led innovation to unlock journeys on foot in a net zero world \n15:30 Networking Break \n15:50 PLANNING FOR REAL CHANGE: Creating the conditions to boost demand in 20 Minute Neighbourhoods \n17.00 CLOSING REMARKS: Reflections and call to arms and legs for the sector \n17.10 Networking reception
